IYC IN BRIEF

The International Youth Council (IYC) was established as a civil society organization during the United Nations’ 4th Annual Youth Assembly in 2007. The major aim of establishing IYC was to provide a global forum and platform for all young people to develop a unified voice and take collective action towards social, economic, and environmental growth, serving as a mobilizing force and change agent.

On August 12, 2007, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, young leaders from across the world signed the “International Youth Council Declaration,” pledging to devote their efforts, energy, and talent to implementing measurable and efficient solutions to end poverty and enhance the human condition.

The United Nations Millennium Development Goals (2007–2015) were used to analyze the IYC Declaration. The IYC supported the Millennium Declaration’s fundamental ideals, which included respect for nature, freedom, equality, solidarity, and tolerance. The IYC is working hard to meet the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals to ensure that everyone worldwide has the right to a productive and decent life.

The International Youth Council (IYC) has been effective in reaching out to and offering services to UN member countries on various continents by establishing IYC chapters around the world. Despite having only a US headquarters at first, the organization expanded to become a significant youth organization with over 56,000 members in 72 UN member nations, including colleges, business groups, and youth councils. Since 2015, IYC members have actively participated in crucial international decision-making processes under the UN’s mandates. On the ground, members of the group have worked on a variety of issues, including gender equality and sustainable development.

On December 31st, 2022, the IYC team officially closed all IYC memberships and chapters. However, the organization launched new initiatives, including the country program, international volunteer program, and global projects, on January 1st, 2023.

With new leadership, IYC will prioritize seven(7) areas of interest as a platform for inclusive and sustainable youth development that aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
